Equines that come to us for training begin their education the moment they enter the barn. We feel that with natural horseman techniques as well as traditional training ideas a clear understanding of "my space, your space" and, as much as possible, a calm awarness of what is around them and what is expected of them can be gained before we even get into longing, long-lining/ ground driving, and eventually working under saddle.
We teach equines in training the basics in rhythm, balance, flexibility, and forwardness before they then graduate to Dressage Levels, Eventing, Western, Pleasure or other careers under saddle. Making sure that each step of the way is clearly understood. We highly encourage owners to participate in this training process at any time, and particularly once it has started to progress.
Whatever style of riding is eventually decided upon, "classical Dressage basics" are a part of all disciplines taught here at TWF. Equines are taught to move away from the leg of the rider, or from the leg into the hand. That hands are for guiding, lowering the poll, encouraging a partnership. Corrections are small and rewards come often! Riders are taught the importance of a balanced secure seat and its' relationship to a balanced, forward, more confident equine.
A favorite of Eli's, is the owner who really wants to be involved with the training process. This is the owner who will eventually take their equine home and know exactly how to work with them ~ developing a real partnership.
Behavior, training, social issues are worked through with both the owner and Eli in a "school" environment, and the equine and owner become more confident with eachother and know what to expect from eachother as well.
When the owner calls for advice, it's usually related to something that has already been addressed at Thornwood, and just needs clarifying. We're always happy to try to answer our clients questions!
